The EqualEdu project (Erasmus+ KA220-HED) focuses on advancing gender equality, equity, and inclusion within European higher education, particularly in the field of health sciences. The project responds to persistent structural inequalities in universities by developing new pedagogical strategies and institutional approaches that integrate affective-sexual and gender diversity into academic environments.
EqualEdu brings together five institutions from across Europe:
University of Malaga – project coordinator
Charles University (Czech Republic)
University of Malta (Malta)
University Degli Studi in Rome La Sapienza (Italy)
Polytechnic Institute in Lisbon (Portugal)
Kaunas University of Applied Sciences (Lithuania)
Throughout the project, we work collaboratively with the partners to:
Assess the current state of gender equality and inclusion in their institutions through participatory research and institutional mapping
Develop and test training modules for academic staff focused on inclusive pedagogical practices
Design a self-assessment toolkit for higher education institutions to reflect on their gender and inclusion strategies
Co-create an institutional roadmap for change to guide universities toward more inclusive, equitable, and diverse educational practices
Organize peer-learning workshops and student engagement sessions to ensure participation of all university stakeholders
As part of the project, transnational meetings serve as key moments for coordination and exchange:
The kick-off meeting took place in Malaga, Spain in 2024, where partners aligned their approaches and initiated research activities
The second meeting was hosted in Malta in 2024, focusing on the review of national contexts and co-design of training content
The third meeting will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, in September 2025, hosted by Charles University. Preparations are currently underway.
By combining research, capacity-building, and institutional engagement, EqualEdu supports universities in becoming truly inclusive learning environments—addressing gender-based exclusion and enhancing academic cultures across Europe.
