The department is theoretically and practically oriented in the field of applied physical activities, health physical education and preventive medicine. The primary goal, intertwined with all the activities of the department, is the application of knowledge, forms, methods and means from medical and physical education disciplines so as to lead to harmonious human development, including the compensation of morphological-functional changes associated with physical activity, age or disability.

The Department provides teaching of subjects related to health and applied physical education; physical education medicine; first aid; hygiene, regeneration and massage. It also provides education of students in the study programme Applied Physical Education and Sport of Persons with Specific Needs at both bachelor and master level, in subjects of special pedagogical basis, clinical subjects, professional practice and in the framework of course teaching.

In addition to direct and indirect teaching activities, the department is involved in research activities, lifelong learning and complementary activities.

The department cooperates with professional institutions and a number of sports clubs for individuals with special needs.
